Why: |
The health crisis of Childhood obesity has reached epidemic levels in California. Over 28 percent of California’s children are considered severely overweight or obese; 32 percent of children within minority and at-risk populations. Overweight children and youths are more prone to developing serious health problems now and in the future. The U.S. Surgeon General states that children who have low levels of physical activity and unhealthy diets are at a greater risk for developing chronic health problems, including Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Asthma, and Strokes. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) scientists recently predicted that 30 percent of U.S. children born in 2000 will develop Type 2 Diabetes in their lifetimes. If left unchecked, Diabetes can lead to complications such as Heart Disease/Attacks, Kidney failure, Blindness, Strokes, and Amputations. It is feared that overweight and obesity may erase all of the last century's victories over Heart Disease and Stroke. One successful program developed to address this serious health issue is CAHPERD’s annual “Jump Rope for Heart” program (implemented in partnership with the American Heart Association). CAHPERD has implemented the annual “Jump Rope for Heart” campaign for over 30 years with schools and other community organizations. The JRFH program provides volunteers with the curriculum, training opportunities and tools to engage children and adults in jumping rope for fitness, while also raising valuable resources for research, educational and prevention programs addressing Heart Disease. This February 1, 2010 Jamba Jump Day mass Jump Rope Record Attempt will be the culminating event of CAHPERD’s 2009-2010 JRFH campaign. CAHPERD recognizes that it requires consistent and ongoing physical education and activity to combat childhood obesity (rather than just one day or event). It is for this reason that CAHPERD and Jamba Juice are also partnering with the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and its “Governor’s Challenge” program, requiring at least 30 days of consistent physical fitness of its participants. Finally, CAHPERD’s Jamba Jump Day is also an important opportunity to remind people that it requires two things to keep children heart-healthy and fit: daily physical education/activity and good nutrition. Jamba Juice oatmeal, which will be served to select volunteers during the Jamba Jump Day event, is made with 100 percent natural organic steel cut oats and a choice of three real fruit toppings. Great tasting, warm and satisfying, Jamba Juice oatmeal is a wholesome and nutritious way to start the day. And every child needs a good, heart-healthy breakfast to succeed in school – and life. The February 1, 2010 Jamba Jump Day Jump Rope Record Attempt event is CAHPERD’s opportunity to remind community members that maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle can be achieved at any age and ability; and it doesn’t have to cost a great deal of money; all one needs is a jump rope and good pair of shoes to develop healthy habits and maintain a lifelong, active lifestyle! |

Who: |
California Individuals, Schools & Organizations: To achieve success and break the record, CAHPERD and Jamba Juice need volunteers, schools and organizations to sign-up and conduct a “Jump Rope for Heart” (JRFH) campaign, as well as register their names and track hours with the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports’ “Governor’s Challenge,” by January 15, 2010. To be accepted as a legitimate World’s Record Attempt, CAHPERD must have these two independent organizations verifying the number of participants. Therefore, to track the number of participants – and help raise valuable resources for heart disease research and prevention -- CAHPERD asks that every person wishing to be counted within the Record Attempt, to please donate at least $1 to the AHA via JRFH pledge form or online. Additionally, CAHPERD requests that participants upload their information on the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, “Governor’s Challenge” website. These two organizations will then provide verification of the participants to the Guinness organization with CAHPERD and Jamba Juice, Inc. On Jamba Jump Day, Monday, February 1, 2010 at 9:00 AM, all participants are asked to jump/skip rope, will also be verified at each site by two independent judges (please see, “How do I participate in the CAHPERD Jamba Jump Day Record Attempt?” check sheet). The event will be planned by CAHPERD and Jamba Juice coordinators throughout the State during monthly (and then weekly) Conference calls and through the CAHPERD website; and it will be implemented in mass via live webcast. |

AHA’s “Jump Rope for Heart” program is a community program primarily conducted in elementary schools in which exercise, healthy eating habits, and benefits of a non-smoking lifestyle are taught. Also of great importance is the message of community service; the AHA makes a difference by giving kids (and school faculty and staff) a positive experience with exercise, teaching them about heart health and providing them with the opportunity to be part of the fight against heart disease. |
