What We Are

The California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD), founded in 1930, is a non-profit, voluntary membership corporation formed exclusively to promote the organizing and progress of school, community and statewide programs of health, physical education, recreation and dance which will embody such opportunities and which will insure the inclusion of such programs within the most appropriate philosophical and social context of life in California.

Organization and Support

CAHPERD is currently governed by its 3,200 members through individual participation, interest area involvement and geographical representation in 24 units, 18 regions and 5 districts which comprise the House of Regions. Special interests are represented in the House of Representatives which is composed of 6 division vice presidents, 6 vice presidents-elect, 10 section chairs and 10 section chairs-elect. The combined membership of these two houses comprise the House of Delegates. The 22-member Board of Directors is responsible for the financial and corporate affairs of the Association. CAHPERD is supported by member dues, revenue from conferences and workshops, Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart fund-raising, Journal/Times advertising, donations, grants and sponsorships.

Long Term Goals

GOAL I Encourage, guide and support professional growth and development in health, physical education, recreation, dance and other movement-related programs based on individual needs, interests, and capabilities.
GOAL II Communicate the importance of health, physical education, recreation, and dance and other movement-related activities as they contribute to human well-being and growth and development of individuals.
GOAL III Encourage and facilitate research which will enrich health, physical education, recreation, dance and other movement-related activities and disseminate the findings.
GOAL IV Develop and evaluate standards and guidelines for personnel and programs in health, physical education, recreation, dance and other movement-related activities.
GOAL V Coordinate and administer planned programs of professional, public and government relations that will improve health, physical education, recreation, dance and other movement-related activities.
GOAL VI Develop and implement a variety of programs to promote awareness and sensitivity within the membership of CAHPERD regarding California equity and diversity issues in HPERD professions.
GOAL VII

Conduct other appropriate activities which are timely and responsive to the professional needs of its members.
